UNI Token

Learn what the UNI token is, its supply and initial distribution, contract addresses, and how protocol fees burn UNI.

UNI is the governance token of the Uniswap Protocol. UNI holders have governance rights and are represented through DUNI. Since December 2025, protocol fees collected across Uniswap's products are used to burn UNI, reducing its total supply over time.

Initial Distribution

At genesis in September 2020, 1 billion UNI were minted and allocated as follows:

The remaining 2.00% (20,000,000 UNI) was allocated to an initial liquidity mining program that ran from September to November 2020, per the UNI genesis announcement.

The 15% airdrop was immediately claimable by historical liquidity providers, users of Uniswap v1 or v2, and SOCKS token holders, based on a snapshot taken September 1, 2020.

The community treasury vested over four years on the following schedule, with governance gaining access to vested UNI beginning October 18, 2020:

YearTreasury release
Year 1172,000,000 UNI
Year 2129,000,000 UNI
Year 386,000,000 UNI

Team, investor, and advisor allocations vested on the same four-year schedule. All vesting concluded in September 2025.

Contract Addresses

Other networks

UNI is available as a bridged token on several networks. Below are the contract addresses for UNI on chains where the protocol fee is active, matching the releaserUni values in govkit.

How UNI Is Used

Governance

UNI holders govern the Uniswap Protocol through onchain voting. Governance authority includes:

  • Setting and modifying protocol fee parameters
  • Approving treasury allocations
  • Minting additional UNI, up to 2% of total supply annually

For the full governance process, see Governance Process.

Protocol fee and UNI burn

Protocol fees can be collected across Uniswap's products and are currently active only on Uniswap v2 and v3. Fees are routed into an onchain collector on each network where they are claimed by external participants in exchange for UNI, which is then permanently burned. UNI holders have no individual or pro-rata claim on protocol revenue; value accrual is mediated entirely through this burn mechanism and any other distribution mechanism governance may subsequently authorize.

For a full description of the fee flow and burn mechanics, see Protocol Fees.
